Volunteer

Volunteering to assist with our clinic can be a rewarding experience, providing valuable support to patients and contributing to the overall well-being of the community. Here are several ways you can volunteer with St. Thomas & St. Croix Cancer Specialists:

patient Support and Companionship:

  • Spend time with patients during treatment sessions, offering companionship and a supportive presence.

  • Assist with non-medical tasks such as reading to patients, playing games, or engaging in conversations to provide emotional support.

Local Participation:

  • Participate in local events, such as Relay for Life, CSVI events, Pinktober, the Sickle Cell Walk, among others to show your support for the fight against oncology & hematology diseases.

  • Donate to local support efforts

Transportation Services:

  • Volunteer to drive patients to and from appointments if they are unable to arrange transportation on their own.

Support Groups:

  • Assist our counsellor in organizing support groups for patients and their families to share experiences, coping strategies, and emotional support.

Language Assistance:

  • Volunteer to offer language support for patients with limited English proficiency by assisting with translation during appointments or providing written translation services.

Art and Wellness Programs:

  • Organize or make donations to support art therapy sessions, wellness programs, or activities that contribute to the overall healing and well-being of patients.

  • Donate your own art to our clinic for the enjoyment of our patients in the infusion areas.

  • Organize fitness and wellness classes geared toward cancer & recovering patients.

  • Write cards and notes of sympathy and support to our patients.

Offer your own expertise

  • Many volunteers have their own expertise in which they can offer a service or project for our clinic specifically. For example, a baker has offered cookies during Pinktober for our patients to enjoy and have laid out in our lobby. Another example is a yoga instructor offering yoga for cancer patients, making a supportive familiar environment for our patients to congregate and practice healthy movement. No matter what your skillset, we welcome your volunteer ideas.

Special Events and Fundraising:

  • Assist in organizing and participating in special events or fundraising activities to support the clinic's programs and services. An example of this was our annual World Cancer Day wig drive, where All Saints Cathedral School’s high school honor society raised over $400 to be donated toward wigs for our patients. Coordinating special events or donating funds raised to help our patients is extremely rewarding for everyone involved.

Donations for Comforting Care:

  • Offer donations to our patients who sit through hours of cancer treatment to make that time more comfortable for them. Ideas include blankets, pillows, snacks or meals, teas,

  • There are also donations of cancer-specific items, such as chemo port shirts, lip balm, fuzzy socks, journals, lozenges, etc. that we are always happy to receive donations of or fundraising for.

  • Donating or fundraising for donations of wigs to our patients who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

Before volunteering, it's essential to contact our office manager to discuss opportunities, requirements, and any necessary training. This ensures a meaningful and positive experience for both volunteers and patients.
