Step 1: Diagnosis and Referral

  • Initial Diagnosis: When you receive a cancer diagnosis, it's natural to experience a range of emotions. It's essential to consult with your referring physician or primary care doctor to discuss what next steps are best for you.

  • Referral to Our Clinic: Once diagnosed or suspected to be diagnosed, you will be referred to our outpatient oncology clinic in St. Thomas or St. Croix; your journey begins here. Our experienced team is here to support you throughout this process. Your physician will send us a referral and we will reach out to you to complete any required paperwork.

Step 2: Scheduling an Appointment

  • Contacting Our Clinic: Get in touch with us to schedule an appointment. Our compassionate front desk staff will assist you in finding a suitable time.

  • Have questions about insurance coverage? Our team is here to help you figure things out. You can find answers to common questions on our Insurance FAQ page or you can reach out to us directly and we can walk you through your options.

Step 3: Comprehensive Evaluation

  • Meeting with Oncology Physicians: During your initial visit, you will meet with our oncology physicians. They will review your medical history, perform a physical examination and discuss your diagnosis and treatment options. If you need additional labwork, our laboratory technician will draw your blood in the clinic and have it processed.

  • Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on your diagnosis, our medical team will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Your treatment might look like:

    • An infusion every three weeks

    • A weekly infusion at our clinic

    • An oral medication you take at home

Whatever your plan includes, our team will walk you through every step and answer any questions you may have.

Step 4: Treatment Options

At St. Thomas & St. Croix Cancer Specialists, we provide a number of different treatment services for those in the U.S. Virgin Islands. You’ll work with our team to figure out the best treatment option for you and your needs, with options including compassionate, local chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments.

Step 5: Clinical and Community Care

  • Nurse Navigators: Our Nurse Navigators help support patients and their families throughout their journey to coordinate care and offer personalized support.

  • Counseling and Support Groups: Dealing with cancer can be emotionally challenging. We offer counseling services and support groups to help you and your loved ones safely, comfortably explore the emotional impact of a diagnosis.

  • Cancer Support VI: CSVI works with patients, medical institutions and community organizations to support those impacted by cancer. CSVI provides outreach, education, advocacy, financial assistance and other resources to support patients on their cancer journeys.

Step 6: Monitoring and Continued Care

  • Regular Check-ups: After starting treatment, you’ll have regular follow-up appointments with your medical team to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. Coordination with Off-Island Facilities

  • Collaboration with Specialized Centers: If your treatment involves radiation therapy or inpatient chemotherapy, we will assist you in coordinating your care with off-island facilities, ensuring a seamless transition.
